Compare two versions of a document or contract

Someone sent back an edited lease, contract or policy and you need to know what actually changed. AI can list the differences in plain words, while Word's built-in Compare double-checks it didn't miss any.

What the bot does

  1. Save both versions as files (Word, PDF or plain text) and name them clearly, like 'Version A, what we sent' and 'Version B, what came back'.
  2. If you have Microsoft Word, run its built-in Compare first (Review, then Compare). It marks every change exactly and doesn't guess.
  3. Upload both files to the AI and paste the prompt below. Ask for a table of every change with both wordings quoted.
  4. Match the AI's list against Word's marked-up compare. If the AI missed something, ask it again section by section.
  5. Use the plain-words list to decide what to accept, ask about or push back on, and get a lawyer for anything that matters.

What you end up with

A plain-words list of every change between the two versions, with both wordings quoted, checked against a real side-by-side compare before you sign or reply.

Copy-paste prompt

Fill in the [brackets]. Then paste it into any tool below.

Copy this prompt
I'm attaching two versions of the same document.

Version A is: [e.g. the lease I was sent last month]
Version B is: [e.g. the new lease they sent back today]

Go through both in order and list every difference. For each one, give the section or clause number, say whether it was added, removed or changed, quote the exact wording from Version A and Version B, and explain the change in one plain sentence. Include changes to dates, amounts, deadlines, names and words like 'must' versus 'may'. Don't skip small edits, and list removed sections, not just changed ones.

Show it as a table. After the table, tell me how many differences you found. Don't tell me whether to sign, and don't give legal advice.

Watch out

  • AI can miss changes, especially deleted lines and small number edits, so check its list against Word's Compare or a careful read of both versions.
  • For anything legally binding, like a lease, job offer or business contract, have a lawyer or the other party confirm what the changes mean before you sign.
  • Remove account numbers, ID numbers and other private details you don't need before you upload, or use a tool your work has approved.

What this costs to run

In a chat app it runs inside your plan. If you run it as a bot on an AI API, the bill depends on how often it runs and how much it reads.

Questions people ask

Can AI compare two documents for differences?

Yes, ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Grok can read two uploaded files and list what changed. Ask for every change with both wordings quoted, then double-check the list, because AI can miss deletions and small edits.

What's the most reliable way to compare two Word documents?

Word's built-in Compare (Review, then Compare) marks every insertion and deletion exactly. Use AI on top of it to explain the changes in plain words.

Which AI tools can do this?
